Mayco Raku Glaze – Copper Penny, Pint Size (Cone 06)

Mayco Raku Glaze – Copper Penny is a stunning metallic glaze designed for Cone 06 raku firing, where flame, smoke, and combustion transform glaze into unpredictable, dramatic surfaces. Copper Penny produces a warm, iridescent copper-metal finish when reduced properly—ideal for sculptural and decorative work.

Raku firing involves removing red-hot pieces from the kiln and placing them in combustible materials to reduce oxygen and produce surface effects. Copper Penny is not food-safe and should only be used on the exterior of ornamental pieces.

Application & Firing Guidelines:

• Shake and stir thoroughly before use

• Apply 2–3 even coats to Cone 04 bisqueware

• Allow to dry fully

• Fire to Cone 06 (1850°F / 1010°C) and hold for 5 minutes

• Remove with tongs and place into a lidded metal container with combustibles

• Let cool completely before cleaning

• Use water and a scouring pad to reveal full metallic luster

• Do not glaze the bottom or inside of ware

Best Practices:

• Use a thermal shock-resistant raku clay body to reduce cracking

• Apply thinner coats to enhance metallic sheen

• Fire in a well-ventilated area using proper safety gear

• Not recommended for functional ware or dinnerware
